Video shows suspect linked to North Miami Beach burglaries by his ankle monitor, police say

Video shows suspect who wore ankle monitor during home break-ins: Police

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Newly-released body camera video shows North Miami Beach police officers speaking to a suspect they said would later be linked to a series of break-ins at a neighbor’s house while they were away.

Authorities said Kovelman Williams, 37, made himself at home while those victims were out of town.

They said he’s believed to have stolen more than $93,000 in Rolex watches and gold and silver collectors’ coins, as well as $650 cash, a vehicle title and a gray scooter.

Local 10 News reported on Williams’ arrest on Feb. 20, one day after he was officially taken into custody.

Investigators said Williams and the victims lived on opposite sides of 169th Street and both victims had been away since December.

Police said they began investigating after responding to a report of an open front door on Jan. 28.

While investigators were at the scene, police said they saw Williams “stopping and stepping onto the front lawn of the property of the (victims’) residence and staying there for a brief moment.”

They then saw him “concealing his face with a hoodie while observing officers,” police said; he then took off on a gray scooter.

Authorities said they stopped him about a block away and he gave his name, date of birth and address and claimed he was a “confidential informant” for the police department, “which was later discovered to be false.”

Police said they noticed Williams’ ankle monitor and he agreed to let them take a picture of him. He then left.

They said they were later able to link Williams to the crime thanks to his ankle monitor, which showed him at the victims’ home multiple times over 11 separate days from Jan. 3 to Jan. 25.

He now faces charges including burglary and grand theft. North Miami Beach police said the investigation is ongoing and others may face charges.
