Bodycam captures arrest of man sought in South Florida murders

COCOA, Fla. — Police body camera video shows officers in Cocoa arresting a man wanted in multiple shootings across Florida.

Cocoa police say 36-year-old Dennard Isiah Barnes was taken into custody after officers tracked down a white van believed to be tied to several violent crimes.

Body camera footage shows officers using a taser as they wrestle Barnes to the ground. A police K-9 was also released to help during the arrest.

Investigators say Barnes had been on law enforcement’s radar for days. He was wanted in connection with an alleged attempted murder case in Brevard County and two killings in South Florida.

Detectives suspect Barnes shot and killed Joshua Nelson in North Miami and Gabriel Hubbert in Miami Gardens. Police say those shootings happened the same night, Feb. 20.

At the time, authorities in South Florida were searching for a white van believed to be the getaway vehicle.

Cocoa police say they later found that van in their area. Body camera video shows the vehicle driving past a group of officers before the driver jumps out and runs toward a nearby home, demanding someone inside let him in.

Investigators say Barnes knew the victims he’s accused of shooting.

When police first identified Barnes as a person of interest in Hubbert’s death, Hubbert’s wife described the violence as disturbing.

“For it to happen in front of our home was a violation and a complete just gruesome situation,” she said.
