TAMARAC, Fla. — Fists were flying as Broward Sheriff’s deputies took down a driver off State Road 7 and Commercial Boulevard on Tuesday.
Video shows three deputies on top of the man.
While one has his arm extended, with a closed fist, he strikes the subject in the face. Seconds later, another deputy is seen throwing repeated blows to his head.
Chrishelle Newkirk said she was outraged by the video that shows her father, 41-year-old Christopher Newkirk, being beaten.
“I can’t keep looking at that,” she said. “That breaks my heart.”
Her father was left with a bruised eye that’s swollen shut, cuts and scrapes to his face and a severe gash to his forehead.
“He wasn’t showing no remorse, you are using your fist, so you meant to do that,” Chrishelle Newkirk said. “You (balled) your fist up and you were punching my daddy.”
The incident happened outside of the Shell gas station located at 5001 N. State Road 7 in Tamarac following a traffic stop just before 4 p.m.
“He was going to work,” said Aubre Fields, Christopher Newkirk’s sister. “You know why he stopped, because he felt confident, he wasn’t doing anything wrong.”
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, they stopped Christopher Newkirk due to tinted windows on his car and said he was found in possession of Fentanyl, Xanax, Flakka and crack cocaine.
Deputies said when they tried arresting Christopher Newkirk, who BSO said was on federal probation, he began to violently resist, striking a deputy in the face and pushing another to the ground. BSO said a deputy was treated at the hospital due to injuries to his ankle and wrist.
Christopher Newkirk has since been booked on a number of charges that include trafficking of Fentynol, covering his side windows with a sunscreen, three counts of resisting arrest and three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer.
“So you’re telling me you all did that because my dad hit your officers? My dad would never hit an officer,” said Chrishelle Newkirk.
On Wednesday, Local 10 News’ Roy Ramos observed BSO deputies attempting to obtain surveillance footage from the Shell station.
There has been no word from BSO on why they made the initial traffic stop and whether the actions of any of the deputies will be investigated.
“My dad, just because of how he looks, his dreads, his hair, you all don’t discriminate him,” said Chrishelle Newkirk. “That doesn’t give you the right to put your hands on him and do that to him.”
Christopher Newkirk remains behind bars at the Broward Main Jail on no bond. He is expected to face a judge sometime Thursday.
BSO said their internal affairs division was reviewing the case, and that their findings would be turned over to the use of force review board.
