MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Police arrested a man in Miami Beach after he allegedly stole several packages from a FedEx truck.
It happened just after 12 p.m. on Wednesday near 1 Collins Ave. on South Beach.
According to police, a witness observed the suspect backing his black Mazda SUV to the rear of the FedEx truck after its driver had gotten out to make a delivery, removing several boxes and placing them inside his vehicle before driving off.
The suspect has since been identified as Shajuan Jones, 26, of Memphis, Tennessee.
After the witness alerted the driver to the theft, police were called and began searching the area for the suspect’s vehicle.
It was located a short distance away and police said when an officer approached the vehicle and ordered Jones to stay put, he looked at the officer but took off anyway.
Authorities said Jones ran several red lights while fleeing officers, but he eventually got stuck in traffic along the MacArthur Causeway and was taken into custody without further incident.
After searching Jones and his vehicle, police said they found a folding pocket knife in Jones pocket, an empty firearm holster on the front passenger seat, an opened package in his back seat and two additional, unopened packages in the trunk ― which contained about $90 worth of paper products.
Investigators said Jones told them that he threw a gun from his car while fleeing police, and after searching the area, officers said they located a black, semi-automatic pistol.
Video surveillance from the FedEx truck allegedly showed Jones removing the boxes, and the witness positively identified Jones to officers, police said.
He is facing multiple felony charges, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance while armed, fleeing or eluding police and tampering with physical evidence.
As of Thursday morning, Jones remained behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a bond of $10,650.
