PINECREST, Fla. — A 57-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning after he broke into an apartment unit in Pinecrest, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, the burglary occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the gated Monterey Gardens apartment complex, located in the 8600 block of Southwest 68th Court.

Police said the suspect, Jose Enrique Cabrera Jr., of Miami, was spotted at the complex twisting the knobs on random apartment doors.

According to the report, he eventually entered an apartment unit that had been left unlocked and began looking around in the kitchen area.

Police said a man and a woman were inside the apartment and the man told Cabrera to leave.

Cabrera told the couple that he was tired and needed to rest, but then left the apartment, authorities said.

According to the report, a witness told responding officers that Cabrera tried to open her front door afterward, but her door was locked.

He was detained a short time later at the nearby Dadeland North train station, carrying multiple bags, the report stated.

Police said Cabrera claimed he had taken a bus to the area and had been offered water by a man, who invited him to the apartment complex.

He claimed he lost sight of the man, so he checked the doorknobs of apartments in an attempt to find him, the report stated.

According to the report, Cabrera admitted to entering the victims’ apartment, and said he left when asked.

Police said glass pipes containing some kind of residue, a hammer and a pocket knife were found in Cabrera’s bags.

According to the report, Cabrera seemed “sluggish” during his interview with a detective and “fell asleep several times.”

He was arrested on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of Friday afternoon, Cabrera was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed in online jail records as “to be set.”
