Video shows arrest of FedEx truck burglar stymied by traffic on MacArthur, cops say

Video shows arrest of man accused of stealing packages from FedEx truck

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Newly-released video shows the arrest of a suspect who Miami Beach police said stole several packages from a FedEx truck.

But police said Shajuan Jones, 26, of Memphis, Tennessee, didn’t make it to the mainland as he tried to get away.

They arrested him after they said he suffered a fate familiar to many a South Florida driver: He got stuck in traffic on the MacArthur Causeway.

Investigators said the theft happened just after noon on Wednesday near 1 Collins Ave. on South Beach.

Video shows both the initial theft and the aftermath, with officers ordering Jones to the ground at gunpoint on the causeway.

“Though this was a misdemeanor crime initially, it turned out to be a very serious and good drug bust,” Officer Christopher Bess, a spokesperson for the Miami Beach Police Department, said.

Bess said Jones not only threw a gun out of the window of his getaway car, but officers found drugs, “from Oxycontins to 150 grams of marijuana.”

He is facing multiple felony charges, including burglary of an unoccupied conveyance while armed, fleeing or eluding police and tampering with physical evidence.

“The vehicle was recovered, the drugs and the firearm were seized for evidence and luckily, a very bad guy was taken off the streets that day,” Bess said.

As of Friday evening, Jones remained behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a bond of more than $17,000.
