FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a woman on Thursday after they said she phoned in a threat to 911 to “blow up” the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Authorities said Barbara Lara, 46, of Boca Raton, called 911 at around 8:25 a.m. and told the dispatcher there was an emergency at the “Fort Lauderdale airport.”
Deputies said the Ecuadorian national then told the dispatcher that her green card was “stolen” and she “missed an appointment.”
According to a BSO report, she “continued to ramble” but then said, “Send me Homeland Security to the airport before I blow up your airport. This is a real threat.”
Deputies said Fort Lauderdale police officers arrested her in front of an apartment building at 715 NE Sixth St.
An alleged confession was redacted from the BSO report, which states that it wasn’t clear whether Lara was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.
Deputies ultimately arrested her on charges of threatening to throw, place or discharge a destructive device and misuse of 911.
As of Friday afternoon, Lara was being held in the North Broward Bureau jail facility on a $10,500 bond, according to BSO records.
