Protests erupt in Cuba as power outages persist

Protests erupt in Havana amid blackouts as Trump says Cuba nearing collapse

MIAMI — Social media video shows protests breaking out in Havana as thousands of people across Cuba remain without electricity amid the island’s energy crisis.

Cuban government officials have blamed the conditions on what they describe as a U.S. fuel blockade affecting the island’s ability to secure oil.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has suggested Cuba’s communist government could soon collapse. Speaking about the situation, Trump described the country’s economy as weak.

The president has also floated the idea of what he called a “friendly takeover” of Cuba.

In Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, many Cuban Americans say they are concerned about relatives and friends on the island who are struggling through the ongoing crisis.

“The people should be fed, should be nurtured, should be cared for, should be given every opportunity to thrive and prosper,” one resident said. “What’s happening in Cuba is not right.”

Trump said Saturday in Doral that Cuba is in its “last moments of life as it was,” adding that the country will soon have what he called “new life.”
