Woman accused of throwing Gatorade at assistant principal at Norland Middle

Police: Woman threw Gatorade at assistant principal at Norland Middle School

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A routine school dismissal turned chaotic Tuesday at Norland Middle School in Miami Gardens after police say a parent threw a drink at an assistant principal.

Authorities say Diliana Quintana-Avila, 40, threw Gatorade in the assistant principal’s face, doing it twice during an incident near the school’s main entrance.

“I can’t believe that happened. That’s crazy. I was shocked,” said parent Ebony Harris.

According to an arrest report from the Miami Gardens Police Department, the assistant principal was monitoring dismissal just before 4 p.m.

Investigators say Quintana-Avila rushed toward the building, but the assistant principal told her that parents are not allowed inside the school after 3:20 p.m.

Police say Quintana-Avila responded in Spanish and then threw Gatorade in the assistant principal’s face.

The report says the assistant principal tried to stop her, but Quintana-Avila allegedly threw the drink again before entering the campus.

When officers arrived, police say Quintana-Avila became irate and resisted arrest.

During bond court Wednesday, Quintana-Avila, who is from Doral, told the judge she had been trying to pick up her daughter when the incident happened.

She was not ordered to stay away from the school but was told to follow school rules.

Parents and students at the school say they support the assistant principal.

“We just need to have patience. We need to try to work with the school,” Harris said.

Student Skyy Harris said the situation didn’t make sense to him.

“I heard about it yesterday and my thought was that it’s kind of crazy. Why are you throwing water at an adult? You’re an adult, so why are you doing that?” he said.
