SWEETWATER, Fla. — A pregnant woman whose husband was fatally shot by Sweetwater police Wednesday night after officers responded to their home regarding an alleged domestic dispute has been released from the hospital, family members told Local 10 News Thursday.
According to police, officers were called to the home near the 11000 block of Southwest Seventh Terrace just before 6:30 p.m. about a domestic altercation.
“When they arrived to the scene and they got to the residence, they were able to see a female at the residence and a male armed with a knife,” Sweetwater police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said.
Police say a confrontation followed between the armed man and the four officers who responded.
Officers then opened fire, killing the 30-year-old man.
“The female was transported to a local hospital because there was noticeable bruising and she’s five months pregnant,” Zabaleta said.
On Thursday morning, family members told Local 10 News the woman had been released from the hospital.
The couple’s next-door neighbor, Sergia Abreu, says she never imagined anything like this would happen in that home.
“They are very good people — truly a wonderful family,” she said in Spanish. “You never hear a raised voice from that house.”
Other neighbors say they were surprised to see such a large police presence in what they describe as a very quiet neighborhood.
“The neighborhood is really calm. Everything is usually good, but with this, we don’t know what’s going on,” a woman identified only as Maria said.
“Sweetwater is usually a chill place,” another neighbor, Michael Chang, said. “I saw the crime scene investigators come out — that’s crazy.”
Further details about the domestic dispute that led to the shooting have not been released nor have the couple’s identities.
