MIAMI — A rainy day in Miami may have forced a change of plans, but it didn’t stop a local group determined to support people in Cuba.
Organizers with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization moved their event indoors Saturday after showers rolled through the area.
Despite the weather, the gathering continued with a silent auction featuring artwork and several raffles aimed at raising money.
The group says the goal is to help send a few Cuban Americans with a convoy of supplies to the island next week.
Organizers say the convoy will carry about 3,000 pounds of supplies.
Supporters say the effort comes as conditions in Cuba continue to worsen. Organizers describe the situation there as dire, with ongoing shortages of fuel and other essential goods.
Members of the group also say they believe U.S. pressure on Cuba is unnecessary and should come to an end.
“It has been incredibly frustrating to see,” said Claudia Rodriguez with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization. “Mostly just because at the end of the day, the people who suffer the most under this blockade are the Cuban people. Even if people might disagree with the government or the government’s policies or whatever the case may be, having this blockade doesn’t make any sense because all it does is bring suffering upon the people everyday. People like my family.”
There will be a food truck and a few live performances at the event, and it will go on until 9 p.m. Sunday.
