NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A witness’s photo of a black Infiniti helped Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies nab a suspect in a deadly Sunday morning hit-and-run within a few hours, according to an arrest report.
Authorities said the wreck happened at around 2 a.m. in the 5500 block of North State Road 7 in North Lauderdale. The 36-year-old suspect, Maurice Anthony Scott, would be in handcuffs just three hours later.
According to a BSO report, the eyewitness told investigators that the other driver, later identified as Scott, went around him at a traffic light and hit the pedestrian at the intersection.
Scott, of Lauderdale Lakes, briefly stopped and exited his vehicle after hitting the pedestrian, “looked at (him) in the roadway then re-entered the vehicle” and drove away, leaving the victim for dead, according to the report.
Deputies said medics took the victim to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead. The report identifies him as a Guatemalan national but does not provide his name or age.
Deputies said that after the witness showed them a photo he snapped of the Infiniti Q50 sedan and its license plate, “1WISE,” they went to Scott’s apartment building at 2999 NW 48th Ave. and found the visibly-damaged car.
According to the report, deputies arrested Scott just after 5 a.m. on charges of leaving the scene of a crash and evidence tampering ― the latter charge, deputies said, was based on Scott taking the car from the scene.
As of Monday afternoon, he remained in the BSO Main Jail on a $82,500 bond.
