MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Tyresse Leonard Jones, a coach at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, was arrested Wednesday by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department for allegedly soliciting sexual activity from a student under 18, authorities confirmed.
An arrest report from the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department states that Jones initially communicated with the student via Instagram and phone messages.
Police said Jones was “someone she trusted,” having been her former flag football coach at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, and their conversations at first were friendly.
While at school, the student claimed that she sometimes asked Jones to speak with her teachers to excuse her from class once she finished her assignments, which he did, according to the report.
However, authorities say Jones, who lives in Miami-Dade’s Brownsville neighborhood, allegedly escalated the relationship by asking her to meet him in the school locker room multiple times.
The student declined the invitations, but Jones reportedly became physical, grabbing her jacket in the chest area, pinning her against a wall, and brushing his hand across her body, according to police.
The report states that Jones also sent explicit sexual messages through phone and Instagram, including comments on her posts, and offered money and personal grooming services such as hair and nail care in exchange for sexual activity.
When communicating with the victim via Instagram, police said Jones messaged, “Man, I wanna make you my girl. I ain’t tryna play you or try you, I want you bad.”
He also wrote, “I wanna hunch you real good. I’m just being honest,” according to the report.
Detectives said they interviewed the student last week, who confirmed that Jones had been her former coach and was currently employed as a security guard at the school.
Local 10’s Isabella Martin spoke with a student at Miami Northwestern Senior High School who said she was on the flag football team and was coached by Jones.
“I was scared,” the student said. “When I saw him at practice, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It made me feel uncomfortable.”
“That’s actually really surprising because a lot of kids go here, so if a teacher is texting inappropriately with a student, that’s unsafe,” added Tiara, a senior at the school.
Parents of students who attend the school were also shocked to hear of the allegations.
“I feel bad for the mom,” One parent told Martin. “I feel bad for her. Because why would someone do this?”
Jail records show he is facing one count each of offenses against students by authority figures, child abuse with no great bodily harm and battery.
A spokesperson with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district released a statement to Local 10 News regarding Jones’ arrest.
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of the arrest of an employee from Miami Northwestern Senior High School by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department,” the statement read. “The type of behavior this individual is accused of will not be tolerated as it runs contrary to the professional conduct we expect from all employees. The District has initiated employment termination proceedings and will ensure the individual is precluded from seeking future employment with the District.”
Jones appeared in Miami-Dade bond court on Thursday morning, where a judge set his bond at $7,500 and ordered him to stay away from the victim and Miami Northwestern Senior High School.
Editor’s note: Although Jones’ arrest report states he was arrested at JC Bermudez Doral Senior High School, a spokesperson with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district confirmed that he is not employed there.
