Indie film festival takes place in Miami

FilmGate Festival takes place in Miami, highlighting independent filmmakers

MIAMI — Nonprofit organization FilmGate is helping to support independent media creators in the area.

Their festival FilmGate Interactive is back for its 12th edition, kicking off at the Frost Museum of Science in Miami, showcasing how new technology influences the future.

“We want Miami to be the media center of the world,” said FilmGate Executive Director Diliana Alexander. “To be an experimentation, new ways to tell stories.”

It’s an ambitious goal.

“I feel that Miami’s audience has always been open,” she said.

It’s that willingness that has led FilmGate to branch out and welcome independent artists from around the globe to the Magic City.

Wednesday night, two Taiwanese films premiered inside the museum’s planetarium.

“We’re combining different technique into filmmaking now a days, like AR, VR, and different formats,” said Alexander. “I think in modern days, this technology becomes a tool.”

The event allows talent and producers to meet, mingle and collaborate.

“We have always focused on emerging talent,” Alexander said. “We want to empower this talent to be able to be a successful. We say you’re not just a filmmaker. I’ll see your creative business.”

From new ventures like a completely AI-generated music video to the lesser-known indie projects, it’s an effort to put Florida, more specifically Miami, back on filmmaking map.

“Hopefully we’re going to have a new governor who is going to have tax incentives back like the other states around us,” said Alexander. “Hopefully we’re making a difference.”
