FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The travel trouble continued at airports across the country Wednesday due to the partial government shutdown as Transportation Security Administration workers also continue to show up to work without pay.
Long lines had been seen at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport throughout the week, though things were running smoothly on Wednesday.
The perfect storm of bad weather, spring breakers and the shutdown appears to have abated, but travelers at FLL told Local 10 News they were still watching closely.
The partial government shutdown has been going on for more than a month and it’s the first week since TSA officers are now without pay.
The agency says more than 300 officers have quit. Travel experts warn if workers continue to leave or call out sick, the ripple effect could make things worse.
“If this continues, it’s not hyperbole to suggest that we may have to quite literally shut down airports,” TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl said during a cable news appearance.
In the meantime, South Florida organizations are stepping up to help out the unpaid workers.
Officials at both FLL and MIA encourage flyers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
