NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — Police say a North Miami woman turned a misdemeanor arrest into a second-degree felony on Thursday when she managed to slip out of her handcuffs in the back of a patrol car and escape the vehicle.

But they said 30-year-old Lantana Chasser didn’t get too far; elevation proved to be her kryptonite.

According to an arrest report, North Miami police responded to Chasser’s apartment in the 13200 block of Memorial Highway at around 5:30 p.m. after she scratched her boyfriend’s ear during a dispute.

The report states that an officer cuffed Chasser on a misdemeanor battery charge and put her in the back of a cruiser.

She didn’t stay put, cops say.

“While secured in the prisoner compartment of my marked patrol vehicle, (Chasser) was able to free herself from the hand restraints,“ the officer wrote in the report. ”(She) then manipulated her arm through the partition bars and opened the unlocked rear door of my marked patrol vehicle from the outside. (She) then exited my mark(ed) patrol vehicle and fled on foot toward the rear of the apartment complex with the hand restraints still attached to her wrist.”

According to the report, the officer chased Chasser. Police said she “attempted to climb over a hill but failed,” falling and causing a minor injury to her knee. Police said she then resisted arrest while being taken into custody for the second time.

Facing charges of escape, domestic battery and resisting without violence, records show Chasser appeared in Miami-Dade court Friday afternoon, where a judge gave her a $3,000 bond.

As of Friday afternoon, she remained locked up in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
