MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A man accused of hitting and killing two Midwestern tourists crossing the street in Miami Beach and fleeing the scene Wednesday night faced a judge on Friday morning.
Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer gave Adan Negron-Morris, 42, a $1 million bond, saying “he poses a great danger to the community.”
Officials with the Miami Beach Police Department said Sarisa Kongduang, 22, and Greatgomon Laowatdhanasapya, 23, were crossing Collins Avenue at 73rd Street on North Beach just after 9:05 p.m. when Negron-Morris, speeding and with no headlights on, hit the two.
Police said Negron-Morris kept driving until his car broke down and he fled into a nearby Walgreens, where a witness chased after and detained him before officers arrived.
“The justification given by the driver was he wanted to kill himself — so he closed his eyes and accelerated," Officer Christopher Bess, an MBPD spokesperson, told Local 10 News on Thursday. “Unfortunately, he didn’t kill himself — he killed two innocent people.”
Kongduang and Laowatdhanasapya, meanwhile, would be taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
According to multiple social media profiles, Kongduang was a business student at Indiana University Bloomington and Laowatdhanasapya was a recent graduate of the school. A LinkedIn profile for Kongduang, originally from Thailand, identifies her as the president of the Association of Thai Students in the United States of America.
Police believe that Negron-Morris may have been under the influence of drugs. Toxicology results remained pending as of Friday.
In court, it was revealed that Negron-Morris, who has a Lakeland address and a prior criminal history in Polk County, has been living in South Florida for the past two months.
If Negron-Morris manages to post his hefty seven-figure bond, he’ll have to submit to “total lockdown” house arrest.
He would also be prohibited from drinking or driving.
