A Sunday sunrise over Miami Beach was worth waking up form signaling a brand-new day.
For many enjoying the early views, it’s not just any Sunday, it’s the start of their spring break weekend.
“Orlando, Albany, New York, Atlanta,” said one of them.
They chose Miami Beach as their reunion spot this year.
“It’s super exciting,” the sister said. “It’s a highly anticipated weekend filled with so many plans once we get back home, and we’re just happy to be here and spend time together.”
But for locals, this spring break feels a little different.
“I did expect more people,” said resident Lajia Evans. “I thought there would be way more going on, but it’s just not a lot.”
Some say that’s because of the strict rules and enforcement city leaders have put in place over the past few years, after previous spring breaks brought massive crowds, violence, and even shootings.
“Living right in the middle of things, you’ve got to get around the blockades and stuff, but other than that, I think it’s good,” said resident Zach Allia. “The streets are quieter, there’s not people yelling in the middle of the night, I like it. I can sleep through the night safe and sound.”
City leaders have also been pushing a different message, encouraging visitors to come for a more health and wellness-focused experience.
