SWEETWATER, Fla. — A 28-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend after police said she left her young daughter alone inside a car while she worked out and showered at a gym in Sweetwater.

According to an arrest report, a man, who is a member of the Crunch Fitness at 1970 NW 117th Place in Sweetwater, called police Saturday and told them he had noticed a toddler alone inside a white Honda Accord in the gym’s parking lot on Friday, and then saw the young girl alone again in the same vehicle on Saturday as he was leaving the gym.

Police said they canvassed the area and found the unattended vehicle with its engine running and the girl, who appeared to be about 3 years old, alone in the backseat without any car seat restraints.

Police said they then saw the girl’s mother, Iranique Nyesha Martin, of Miami, leaving the gym and walking toward the vehicle.

According to the report, Martin claimed to have entered the gym to use the restroom, but police confirmed via surveillance footage that she had actually exercised at the gym, leaving her daughter alone inside the car for about an hour.

Police said after being read her Miranda rights, Martin admitted to exercising and showering at the gym.

Martin was arrested on a charge of child neglect without great bodily harm.

Police said the child’s father took custody of her and the car, which is registered in his name.

As of Monday morning, Martin was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed her total bond as “to be set.”
