South Florida bake shop has sweet spot for special needs community

MIAMI — A family business in Miami was inspired by some very special kids.

Logan is 7 years old and has Down syndrome. His brother also has autism.

Their mom, Jessica Galdamez, is who opened her cheesecake business, called Cakes for a Cause.

Her mission is not only whipping up delicious flavors – like Guava and Golden Oreo – but to give back to the special needs community.

The bake shop donates a portion of its monthly profits to organizations that support individuals with disabilities, including programs for Down syndrome and autism.

“He’s taught us a lot about life, how to be patient, how to be more caring, be more giving towards the community,” Galdamez said of Logan. “Our main goal at Cakes for a Cause Bakeshop is inclusion. We want the community to be able to offer the same equal opportunities for the special needs community as they do for the neurologically-typical community.

Galdamez said her goal is to open a storefront and to employ people with differing abilities and show the world how capable they are.
