Track coach gets 50 years for raping 14-year-old student

MIAMI — A Miami Gardens track coach convicted of raping a 14-year-old student athlete is set to be locked up for decades.

Darius Lawshea, who turned 51 one day before learning his fate on Tuesday, will serve 50 years behind bars after being found guilty of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation charges.

Prosecutors say he used his position as the founder of Miami Gardens Xpress track and field to take advantage of girls he coached.

Police arrested the then-45-year-old Lawshea in October 2020.

He’s been charged in several other cases as well, but those have yet to go to trial.

Lawshea will now be placed on the list of sexual predators.
