MIAMI — A 29-year-old man has been identified as a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred at a Miami restaurant/ smoke shop nearly two weeks ago, police confirmed Wednesday.
According to an arrest affidavit from the Miami Police Department, DeAngelo Wright is accused of robbing a man at gunpoint on March 13 at the U Save Fish & Chicken and Smoke Shop, located at 6900 NW Seventh Ave. near Miami’s Little River neighborhood.
Officers responded to the scene around 7:53 p.m. and spoke with the victim and his father.
The victim told police he had arrived at the business with his father to order food when he noticed Wright inside the store staring at him before briefly leaving, according to the report.
Investigators said Wright returned moments later wearing a ski mask, approached the victim and pulled out a black semi-automatic assault rifle that had been concealed in his pants.
The suspect then pointed the weapon at the victim and demanded his jewelry, telling him, “Don’t move, take it off,” according to the report.
Police said Wright initially tried to forcibly remove a gold Cuban link bracelet but was unsuccessful.
They said the victim, while fearing for his life, removed his gold Cuban link chain, bracelet and a gold ring with a lion’s face and handed them over.
Wright then fled the scene in what police said was later identified as a black 2009 Hyundai Sonata with a Florida license plate.
The report states that surveillance video from the business captured the robbery and provided a clear image of the vehicle’s license plate.
Police said a search through law enforcement databases linked the car to Wright, and investigators said his driver’s license photo matched the individual seen in the footage.
An employee at the business also identified Wright as a regular customer and positively identified him as the suspect, according to the report.
Officers later located the vehicle after it had crashed into a light pole near Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest 69th Street. The car was found abandoned, and investigators said the license plate had been removed in an apparent attempt to conceal the suspect’s identity.
They said the victim’s stolen ring was recovered on the sidewalk next to the driver’s side door of the vehicle and was later returned.
Jail records show Wright is facing one count of armed robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon.
As of Wednesday, he was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
