MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A rush to rescue in the dark of night after a hit-and-run on the water turned deadly in Biscayne Bay.
Radio calls captured the urgency as crews put out a bolo for a navy blue boat with front-end damage.
Investigators say that boat slammed into a small, 7-foot inflatable dinghy in the Meloy Channel, killing 55-year-old Davide Veglia and injuring his 14-year-old son.
New surveillance images appear to show the vessel they’re now searching for.
Just moments after the crash, two Miami Beach High students working at a home nearby on Biscayne Point say they heard someone screaming for help.
“You could hear his voice cracking -- he was yelling so loud, he started saying ‘help, help, help,’” Enzo said.
First responders got there within minutes. Video from the scene even shows one rescuer jumping into the water.
However, the boat was gone by the time they arrived.
That’s when multiple agencies, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, moved in and started treating the area like a crime scene.
They’re now looking for a dark blue boat with a black bottom, about 20 to 30 feet long, possibly with two outboard motors -- last seen heading north from the Meloy Channel.
As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made, and authorities are still searching for whoever fled.
