Gas prices in South Florida ticked up again over the past week, continuing a sharp upward trend driven by global supply concerns.
According to GasBuddy, gas prices in Fort Lauderdale now average $4.01 and average $3.94 in Miami.
While the weekly increase was modest, prices are significantly higher than in recent weeks—up $1.04 per gallon from a month ago and 91 cents higher than this time last year.
Across the country, the national average for gasoline also increased, rising 2.4 cents to $3.95 per gallon. National prices are up nearly 98 cents compared to a month ago and about 84 cents higher than a year ago.
Diesel prices are seeing even steeper increases. The national average jumped 14.3 cents in the last week to $5.369 per gallon, marking the highest level since July 2022.
“Gasoline and diesel prices continue to climb to multi-year highs as the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz curtails the flow of millions of barrels of crude oil each day,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The situation remains highly volatile and unpredictable, but upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist as long as global oil supplies are constrained by the continued disruption in the Strait.
“We’re likely to see the national average for gasoline push beyond the $4-per-gallon mark, while diesel could approach $6 per gallon and potentially set new records if conditions fail to improve. Americans have already spent nearly $8 billion more on gasoline over the past month, a trend that poses growing risks to the broader economy, while surging diesel prices may begin to reaccelerate inflation.”
Meanwhile, lawmakers are pushing to suspend the federal gasoline tax in the latest attempt to try to control surging energy costs.
Lawmakers say the action would provide much-needed relief for families and businesses that rely on their cars and trucks to get to work and school and run everyday errands.
Asked about the gas tax at a Cabinet meeting Thursday, President Donald Trump said he has “thought about” suspending it but suggested states should consider suspending their fuel taxes.
“People have talked about” a gas tax suspension, Trump said. “It’s something we have in our pocket if we think it’s necessary.”
As gas prices have spiked, the Trump administration has released millions of barrels of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve and temporarily lifted sanctions on some Russian and Iranian oil shipments already at sea. The U.S. is negotiating with countries reliant on Middle East crude to join a coalition to police the Strait of Hormuz, where about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil normally flows.
