HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A Homestead woman was arrested Wednesday after police said she allegedly threatened to kill her adult son with a box cutter while he was reading the Bible.
The suspect was identified in an arrest report from the Homestead Police Department as Debra Girline Simmons, who turns 59 years old in less than two weeks.
Officers were dispatched to an apartment near the 400 block of Southwest Fourth Avenue after a woman called 911 and said she was going to kill her son, the report states.
When officers arrived, police said Simmons and her son were standing outside their apartment.
The victim told investigators the confrontation began while he was reading his Bible and Simmons became upset. He said Simmons then armed herself with a box cutter and began swinging it at him while saying she was going to kill him, according to police.
The victim said he feared he would be cut and began recording the incident on his cellphone. He then provided statement to police along with the video, which was submitted to responding officers.
Police said the victim was not injured and photographs confirmed no injuries.
Simmons was read her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with investigators without an attorney present, according to the report.
Jail records show Simmons is facing one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police did not say what led to Simmons’ threat against her son in her arrest report.
As of Thursday, she was being held on a $5,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
