CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — One by one, those who knew Nancy Metayer remembered her life and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.
“She was such a power. And she’s just gonna be so greatly missed,” said Tray Johns, a colleague.
At the Freedom Lab Saturday night, a Miami community center Metayer was a part of, loved ones laid down flowers and lit candles in her honor.
“As an abolitionist, I hope they put him up under the jail. Yes,” Johns added.
The vigil aimed to shine a light on Metayer’s life. She was a community organizer dedicated to showing up for her neighbors.
“Have anybody ever came to you and said anything bad about her? Never. You never heard anything bad,” said one organizer.
Metayer also went above and beyond for racial and environmental justice.
“Nancy’s just been a rising, shining star in the state of Florida with such a gentle, beautiful spirit,” Johns said.
In Coral Springs, her community came together earlier Saturday for a peace walk led by the city’s mayor alongside neighbors and friends.
