What to know as Brickell Key hotel comes down

Preps underway for Sunday implosion

Preps underway for hotel demolition

MIAMI — The Mandarin Oriental hotel on Miami’s Brickell Key is set to be demolished on Sunday morning.

The building is scheduled to come crashing down in a controlled implosion.

Miami police say the entrance to Brickell Key will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police will be in the area, along with Miami Fire Rescue in case of any emergencies and onlookers will be kept back at least 800 feet as the concrete structure is already armed with multiple explosives.

“We expect that there’s going to be a lot of dust, but these companies have planned vigorously to make sure that this goes on without any harm to the surrounding buildings, to the atmosphere,” Officer Michael Vega, a spokesperson for the Miami Police Department, told Local 10 News.

The implosion is only slated to last 20 seconds as the building falls in place, all to make room for ultra luxury residences and a hospitality site that will bear the same Mandarin Oriental name.

It’s slated to stand 66 stories at its highest point. Neighbors are being asked to prepare.

“Between eight and maybe nine, that they should not use air conditioning,” Vega said. “Make sure that all their doors are closed, make sure that all their windows are closed.”

Residents are also being advised to be mindful of their pets, who may be scared by the implosion.
