HIALEAH, Fla. — A felon with convictions for armed robbery and drug trafficking waited out his victim for more than an hour before murdering him in a Hialeah neighborhood in late March, according to police.
Johnny George Mays, 48, of Cutler Bay, is now facing a first-degree murder charge after being arrested on Thursday and appearing before a judge on Monday morning.
According to the Hialeah Police Department, the deadly shooting happened just after 6:45 a.m. on March 28 outside of a home in the 600 block of West 15th Street.
Investigators said surveillance video showed Mays “staging approximately a block away” for an hour and nine minutes, “waiting for the victim to exit his residence.”
Police said when the victim exited his home, Mays drove up in his getaway vehicle, got out and “(ran) towards the victim with his arms raised in a shooting stance,” shooting him multiple times in his driveway before getting back in the driver’s seat and fleeing.
The report doesn’t identify the victim or state a suspected motive. Local 10 News has contacted HPD seeking additional information.
Police said they were able to identify the getaway vehicle and contacted the owner, who said Mays had used it since late 2025. Investigators said they were eventually able to pin the crime on Mays.
An arrest report states that officers found Mays near his home in the gated Cutler Cay subdivision on Thursday and took him into custody. Authorities said he invoked his right to an attorney and did not speak with investigators.
Records show he wasn’t booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until Saturday. It appears he had been hospitalized in the interim period; he’s pictured in his booking photo wearing a medical gown and his jail roster information references Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ward D, a lockdown unit for inmates.
Besides first-degree murder, Mays also faces a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. A judge ordered him held without bond Monday morning.
As of Monday morning, Mays remained locked up at TGK, records show.
