FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A judge on Tuesday ruled that a 17-year-old boy accused of attempted sexual battery will remain in juvenile detention until at least May 8 following a brief court hearing in Broward County.
Anthony Gonzalez Tovar appeared in court via Zoom on Tuesday due to a clerical error. The hearing lasted about 10 minutes.
“Do you have any questions about what I ordered? Or being in the detention center?” Judge Stacy Ross asked Gonzalez Tovar.
“No,” he replied.
Gonzalez Tovar shook his head as Ross ordered him to remain detained until May 8 and imposed additional conditions, including restrictions on contact and location.
“He’s ordered to not return to the location of this incident, Ross said. ”He’s ordered to have no unsupervised contact with a minor 16 or younger.“
Jail records show Gonzalez Tovar is facing a charge of attempted sexual battery in connection with an April 8 incident in Weston that was captured on video.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies previously released surveillance footage they say shows Gonzalez Tovar exposing himself before approaching a woman sitting on grass along the 16300 block of Golf Club Road in Weston.
Investigators say the video shows Gonzalez Tovar looking around before grabbing the victim from behind. The woman is seen fighting back before he runs away.
Gonzalez Tovar’s mother, stepfather and newly appointed attorney were present for the hearing.
Another hearing is scheduled for May 6, at which time the court is expected to address his future placement and living arrangements.
Ross also ordered Gonzalez Tovar to undergo a psychosexual evaluation.
