MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — In America’s pastime, Skip Bertman is a legend in the college game.

Now, his legacy will forever be etched onto his hometown baseball diamond.

Flamingo Park Baseball Field on Michigan Avenue in Miami Beach was officially renamed this week to Stanley Skip Bertman Field.

Bertman, who turns 88 next month, graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1956, later returning to the school as a coach and winning a state championship.

He also played on the field growing up.

“I’m proud of the name of this field in particular because I was here so often and played so often here. I had so many friends,” Bertman said.

He later led the LSU Tigers baseball to five national championships.

To this day, he has the highest winning percentage in postseason play.

“Here in Miami Beach, he represents a legacy of excellence, leadership and lasting impact on generations of athletes in our community,” said Miami Beach City Manager Eric Carpenter.

“I’m so happy and so lucky,” Bertman said.

Bertman smiled as he met friends old and new in the hometown he’ll always treasure.
