The incident happened on Tuesday around 9:30 p.m. along the 100 block of Southeast Seventh Street in Deerfield Beach.

According to deputies, the victim’s wife was walking her dog in front of her home when her neighbor, identified by police at Scott Surace, approached her with his dog, which she feared would become aggressive toward her dog.

After Surace was asked to keep his dog away, deputies said he began to get aggressive, so the woman called her husband and went inside her home.

According to authorities, after her husband returned home, he was making himself dinner when he heard “what sounded like impacts against the front of his home” and rushed outside to see Surace running away “while laughing” and noticed the home had been egged.

That’s when deputies said Surace returned to the victim’s home with a golf club and stated “You want to go to war? I’ll use this on you” while holding the club over his head and swinging it in what deputies described as “a threatening manner.”

Authorities said Surace then took off on an electric scooter before deputies arrived, but he was apprehended later in the evening when he returned home.

During their investigation, deputies said they also found that a tire on the victim’s vehicle had been slashed, and that “while Surace was not seen slashing the tires, it can be concluded that he was likely responsible.”

The victims told deputies that they have had issues with Surace for several years, stating that “he believes that they are associates of the mafia who are out to get him,” according to an arrest form.

After his arrest, Surace told deputies that he was “only 50 feet away” from the victims and that he “grabbed a golf club to defend himself,” before telling deputies his actions would fall under the “stand your ground” statute after he was informed of his charges.

Detectives said that “it was evident that Scott was in a state of delusion and that if left untreated he would likely become a threat to others.”

Surace was ultimately charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and criminal mischief with property damage $200 or less.

He was not listed among Broward County jail inmates as of Thursday afternoon.
