According to an arrest report from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, on Nov. 13, 2024, a victim from Montana mailed the suspect, Salvatore De Rosa, of Deerfield Beach, $246,599 worth of coins.

Detectives said the victim believed he was sending the coins to a legitimate gold and silver dealer named AMG Rarities, with the intent to sell the coins.

According to the report, De Rosa paid for the victim to ship the coins via FedEx in four boxes, but after receiving the boxes, De Rosa stopped all communication with the victim.

Detectives said the victim later received four boxes back filled with printer paper.

According to the report, investigators discovered that De Rosa had signed for the boxes.

But when detectives went to his home on Jan. 6. 2025, they said he claimed that his “marketing business” had been dissolved six months ago and that while he signed for the boxes, he never opened them and shipped them back to the “unknown” sender the following day at his own expense of $300.

Detectives said De Rosa repeated “over and over” that he would provide the FedEx return tracking receipt, but then went inside and closed the door.

According to the report, De Rosa did provide a copy of the receipt to law enforcement the following day, but further investigation revealed that the boxes weighed 81 pounds on delivery and just 31.30 pounds when they were sent back to Montana.

Since last year, detectives said they have made multiple attempts to locate De Rosa, with “negative results.”

Online jail records show he was arrested Thursday on a first- degree grand theft charge.

As of Friday morning, he was being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond.
