PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A Palm Beach County man is speaking out after making a disturbing discovery on his property that has now sparked a criminal investigation.
Carlos Delamo said someone dragged his 320-pound pig, Harold, out of its pen and beat it to death overnight Friday.
“We found Harold laid out in the pen,” Delamo said while showing the area behind his property where the pig lived.
Delamo said two people went to care for the three pigs he owns Friday morning when they discovered Harold dead.
“It was just cruel and a terrible way to find him,” he said.
According to Delamo, it appears someone jumped the fence, forced Harold out of the pen and attacked the animal.
“What we assume happened is somebody jumped the fence and pushed Harold out of his pen and we can see by the hematomas on his side and on the top side, they basically kicked him to death,” he said.
Delamo said he initially did not want to involve law enforcement because he did not want to waste police resources over a pig. But neighbors urged him to report it because of concerns about whoever may have been responsible.
“They really do need psychological help because the reality is to do something so brutal and heinous is unbelievable,” Delamo said.
The killing has also raised concerns about safety in the neighborhood.
Delamo said he is now taking additional security measures, including keeping the pig pen locked at all times and installing 10 security cameras around the property.
“As a community, we don’t want anyone here that is capable of doing it,” he said. “And we’re going to do everything as a community to prevent it from happening in the future.”
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the case is under investigation and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
