SUNRISE, Fla. — A female driver was hospitalized after crashing into an apartment at a retirement community in Sunrise on Friday morning, according to police.
Sunrise police said the crash happened at the Sunrise Lakes Phase 2 apartment complex in the 8500 block of Sunrise Lakes Boulevard, where the driver of a gray Hyundai crashed through the front door of a unit just before 8:30 a.m.
They said the woman drove over a parking stump and struck the apartment unit.
Investigators confirmed that no injuries were reported, but the driver was transported to a hospital as a precaution.
A neighbor and a health care worker at the scene told Local 10’s Jackie Pascale that a 99-year-old woman lives in the apartment and receives assistance from two female health aides.
They said one aide was arriving to switch shifts when, for unknown reasons, the car went through the front of the unit instead of parking in the lot.
Neighbor Sonya Linton told Pascale that she heard a “big boom” when the driver slammed into the home.
“I just hope they’re OK,” Linton said. “I hope the building is safe.”
Family members of the senior tenant later arrived at the scene as crews boarded up the damaged apartment and placed an “unsafe building” sticker on the unit’s front window.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Editor’s note: A neighbor initially told Local 10 News that three people were hospitalized in the crash, but Sunrise police later confirmed that the driver was the only person transported to the hospital as a precaution. This story has since been corrected.
