PINECREST, Fla. — Surveillance footage shows a burglary crew targeting vehicles in Pinecrest before a police officer caught on, leading to a chase that would ultimately end with the suspects crashing in Broward County.
The footage captured the burglars attempting to steal from outside of a home on Southwest 66th Avenue at around 2 a.m. Sunday.
The suspects were dressed in black and donned ski masks and could be seen moving from car to car in search of valuables.
“It’s a very quiet neighborhood,” neighbor Dave Auslander said. “We always feel safe here, but as I think any of us in this country have learned, any bad stuff can happen anywhere.”
A Pinecrest police officer eventually noticed the suspects’ BMW parked on the wrong side of the road.
As the officer approached, the suspects quickly returned to their car and intentionally backed into the officer’s cruiser, damaging it before speeding off.
Pinecrest police pursued the crew until they lost sight of them. The group would ultimately wreck at Interstate 95 and Griffin Road.
Police apprehended one of the suspects at the scene while the remaining suspects managed to escape. The captured suspect’s identity was not immediately released.
Authorities said they’ve identified the BMW’s owner but said he or she has not cooperated.
Pinecrest police said the case serves as a good reminder to residents to lock their vehicles, remove valuables from sight and to install security cameras.
