Local 10 News spoke to a 64-year-old man from Massachusetts whose mother was recently targeted by scammers.

Her story was shared on Tuesday as authorities warned the public against similar scamming attempts.

That elderly woman thought she won a big prize, but her family became very concerned when they stated to see withdrawals from her account and then were told that she was going to meet someone with cash.

“She said it was $7 million, but it was actually $72 million and a Mercedes car (she thought she had won),” her son said.

That man, who did not wish to be identified for this story, flew to South Florida from Boston and followed his mother to make sure she wasn’t going back to the bank.

“I got really concerned because she had told my sister that she was meeting someone on Tuesday at noon, so I decided to hop on a plane,” he said. “And concurrent to that, my wife called the Coconut Creek police.”

He said he wanted to make sure that his mother wasn’t going to the bank.

“She was surprised I was there,” he said. “We did deal with a little bit of embarrassment and a little bit of forgetfulness.”

Meanwhile, he said the scammers are still trying to contact his mom, while officers said that is usually the case in these situations.

“There continue to be multiple calls on a daily basis from the number associated with the scamming,” he said.

That man is hoping that sharing his mother’s story will help keep the next person from being scammed.
