NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Police put a South Florida couple behind bars, accusing them of using card skimmers to steal bank account information and money.
North Miami Beach police said Norvys Colmenares Zambrano, 46, was seen on video using multiple debit cards at the ATM at the CVS Pharmacy at 1825 NE 185th St. on May 22.
Police said they got the tip from a man who reported that his debit card data had been used without his authorization to make five withdrawals from the ATM.
Police said Colmenares used a deliberate and organized method. Video showed him handling the debit or credit cards, removing and reinserting cards from a wallet that appeared to contain separate sections designated for cards that had already been attempted and cards yet to be used.
Authorities said he was living with Janckeily Guerra Machado, 29, and a child in a northwest Miami-Dade apartment.
Police said they found a card skimming device with a pinhole camera used on ATMs or register terminals to steal account numbers and PINS sitting right on their kitchen counter.
Detectives also say they found 143 credit, gift and prepaid cards, including 132 that had been re-encoded.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also got involved: The pair are Venezuelan nationals who entered the U.S. illegally.
Anyone who thinks they may have been victimized by Colmenares or Guerra is asked to call North Miami Beach Police.
Police took both into custody on multiple charges Tuesday. The couple remained behind bars Thursday afternoon on an immigration hold.
