FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Sean Alexis appeared before a Broward County judge Sunday, days after Fort Lauderdale police arrested him in connection with a crash involving a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Authorities said the 40-year-old is accused of hitting a deputy’s vehicle on Broward Boulevard on Friday evening and then leaving the scene.

An eyewitness said a black vehicle ran a red light and struck the sheriff’s vehicle on the side.

“The black vehicle ran through the red light. Caught the sheriff car on the side. The sheriff’s car spinned all the way down to Broward Blvd until it made a stop,” the witness said.

The witness also said the driver got out of the vehicle and ran across the street.

During Sunday’s hearing, prosecutors detailed Alexis’ driving history, which dates back to 2008 and includes multiple traffic violations.

Court records show violations ranging from running red lights to a conviction for driving 95 mph in a 65-mph zone.

Records also show Alexis’ driver’s license has been suspended since August. He currently has a pending case alleging he drove 55 mph in a 35-mph zone and failed to obey a traffic control device.

Earlier this month, officers cited Alexis and accused him of knowingly driving with a suspended license while traveling 37 mph in a school zone.

His defense attorney told the court Alexis cares for two children, ages 10 and 4, is unemployed and can only afford to pay $1,000 toward a bond.

If Alexis is released on bond, a judge ordered that he must wear an ankle monitor. He also is prohibited from driving and must surrender his passport.
