MIAMI — After a swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday in downtown Miami, Chief Edwin Lopez said he was ready to meet all of the department’s police officers.
Lopez, 45, the former chief of the Doral Police Department, stood next to his wife, Jannett Lopez, on stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
“I’m just a humble kid from Miami that grew up with no money, immigrant parents,“ said Lopez, who has more than 28 years of experience in law enforcement.
Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins approved of Miami City Manager James Reyes’s choice to succeed Manuel Morales.
Lopez, a Southwest Miami Senior High School and Florida International University graduate, was the chief of the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department.
Lopez’s new salary with the city will be $325,000.
