MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 72-year-old man told Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies that a suspect he knows as “Big Baby” pulled a gun on, stabbed and robbed him as he walked down the street in the county’s West Perrine area in early July.
Authorities said they took “Big Baby” ― a street name used by Thomas Isaac Dudley ― into custody on Thursday.
State records show that Dudley, 49, spent nearly 15 years in prison after committing a robbery in Brevard County and had just gotten out of prison in April after a Miami-Dade grand theft conviction. Besides “Big Baby,” he’s known by several other aliases, including “Pinky Baby” and “Teddy Bear.”
But he’s accused of acting like anything but a teddy bear on the morning of July 8.
According to an MDSO arrest report, the victim told deputies he was walking in the area of Southwest 102nd Avenue and 174th Terrace at around 6 a.m. when Dudley got out of the passenger’s seat of a car and pointed a gun at him, telling him, “Give me the money. Where’s the money, boy?”
Deputies said after the victim told him he didn’t have any money, Dudley “then armed himself with a galvanized metal fence post/pipe” and began hitting him with it, causing him to fall.
According to the arrest report, Dudley then began to “strike and stab the victim in the chest/collarbone area, left torso, and left upper leg/groin area,” causing cuts and bruises. Deputies said Dudley made off with about $130 and got back in the vehicle and the unknown driver sped away.
Deputies said a passerby called 911 as the victim hid in the bushes and he was eventually treated in the emergency room.
According to the report, the victim told investigators that he believes Dudley targeted him because he is disabled ― using a urostomy bag ― and “unable to defend himself.”
The victim added that Dudley knows that he “panhandles nearby and is known to always have some money.”
Authorities said they recovered the “bloodstained fence post/pipe” and took it into evidence. Meanwhile, they said the victim later identified Dudley “via confirmation photo.”
Authorities said they went to Dudley’s home in the 13600 block of Jackson Street in the county’s Richmond Heights area on Thursday to take him into custody.
“Big Baby,” they said, was “combative” and deputies didn’t interview him.
Records show Dudley, arrested on charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, was being held without bond in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday afternoon.
