BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — There are several candidates running for the Broward County School Board’s seat in District 6, which represents central west Broward County.
Incumbent Adam Cervera is facing four opponents in this election.
Cervera, an attorney by trade, was appointed to by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2025.
District 6 includes Cooper City, Davie, Plantation, Sunrise and Weston.
“We have to restore fiscal sanity and fiscal responsibility to this board,” said Cervera. “I’ve been happy to lead the charge on a lot of these things, from cancelling leases for millions of dollars that we didn’t need.”
Candidate Jessie Bastos is a Broward County District 6 graduate.
“I have 22 years of outside business experience that I think is needed on the board to make better decisions with our $5.4 billion a year budget,” said Bastos.
Camp Wannadoo owner Lester Wilks Jr. also has his eyes on the District 6 seat.
“The district has been declining for the past five years,” he said. “I’m listening to what teachers are saying, I’m listening to what administrators are saying. I hear the concerns of the parents.”
Candidate Roberto Fernandez has been a teacher for 21 years and now hopes to help lead the district.
“We have a lot of applications that we spend a lot of money on and the kids do not find them effective or helpful,” Fernandez said. “If we just go back to the basics and really focus on reading writing and arithmetic, I think we will see students who are more competitive.”
Makai Henry is hoping to lead the district he graduated from just three years ago by tackling declining enrollment.
“It’s to create value-add programs that keep people in our schools,” he said. “If students and families don’t have value-add programs that make them want to stay in our schools, they’re going to go to charter and private schools.”
School board elections are nonpartisan. While you do have to be registered to vote, you are not required to be registered with a political party in order to vote for who will represent your district on the school board.
Election day is Aug. 18.
