MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A proposal to dramatically cut homeowners property taxes in Florida is facing a hurdle in making the November ballot.

On Tuesday, a judge called the ballot language clearly and conclusively defective, and more like a political slogan.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier now has 10 days to rewrite it.

“The team is looking at that,” he said. “It just came down.”

The proposal would increase the homestead exemption to $250,000 dollars by 2028.

Eventually, the state could get rid of property taxes for homeowners entirely, but it’s facing steep pushback from law enforcement around the state.

The Florida Sheriff’s Association has warned it could allow the state to control local budgets and lead to longer police response times while preventing communities from fixing roads.

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said he is keeping a close eye on things.

“To make cuts up to and including your most essential core services, police, fire rescue, so we are concerned about that, how that would look,” said Ramsay.

Ramsay said the Florida Keys would be in a better spot than other parts of the state because of the number of high property values and second homes, but he wonders what it would mean for the Traumastar air ambulance program and other police services.

“What the impact is going to be is really yet to be seen if it passes,” he said.

The Florida State Fraternal Order of Police and Florida Fire Chiefs Association have come out against the measure over concerns it will affect public safety.

Local 10 News reached out to law enforcement leaders around South Florida.

Most didn’t respond or declined to comment, including the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss didn’t want to get into it.

“I’m not gonna talk about it,” he said. “That’s too much like politics.”

Ramsay did add that he supports the merits of tax reform for homeowners, especially in the Florida Keys, where he says many people are being priced out.
