MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 21-year-old man told deputies that a police officer’s Miami Police Department-issued white RAM 1500 was unlocked with guns, a gold bracelet, external hard drives, and a backpack in Miami-Dade County, according to a deputy’s report.
Stephon L. Perry confessed to burglarizing the police officer’s assigned unmarked pickup truck before sunrise on July 22 in the West Little River neighborhood, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy’s arrest report.
“The victim’s vehicle had been unlocked, allowing him to gain entry without force,” Perry told the deputies, according to the arrest report.
The police officer told deputies that two guns — a “personally-owned Glock 48 handgun” and his police department-issued “Glock 17 handgun” — had been stolen, according to the report.
“A personally-owned 10-karat gold Cuban link bracelet, valued at approximately $3,000 ... had also been stolen from the front center console cup holder,” a deputy wrote, according to the report.
Three shield external T7 hard drives vanished, including two from the FBI and one from the MPD, according to the deputy’s report.
Detectives used surveillance videos to track Perry, who was wearing a “distinctive afro hairstyle,” a dark-colored jacket, and blue shorts, to a house in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, according to the report.
“While searching the kitchen area, I located a white styrofoam food container concealed inside the storage compartment beneath the oven,” a deputy wrote, adding that the container had the officer’s Glock and a Springfield Armory 9mm Hellcat, which had been reported stolen in another case.
After a pursuit that included a perimeter, Perry returned to his home in Liberty City, and a deputy arrested him shortly before 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, near Northwest Eighth Avenue and 70th Street, according to the deputy’s report.
Detectives questioned Perry at the nearby Northside District Station, and he confessed to throwing away the backpack and the hard drives in a dumpster in Liberty City, and selling the bracelet and the MPD-issued Glock 17, according to the report.
A detective reported using a database to track the police officer’s stolen bracelet to the King Cash Pawn & Jewelry in West Little River, according to the report.
Miami-Dade corrections booked Perry shortly before 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to inmate records.
Perry, who had been arrested for burglary twice earlier this year in Miami-Dade, faced nine charges in two new cases filed by prosecutors on Wednesday, according to Miami-Dade court records.
For the police vehicle burglary, Perry faced eight charges: Armed burglary, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, two counts of third-degree grand theft of a firearm, two counts of dealing in stolen property, third-degree grand theft while armed, and resisting arrest without violence.
For the stolen Springfield Armory Hellcat, Perry faced an additional charge of third-degree grand theft of a firearm, according to court records.
A judge denied him bond on the armed burglary charge. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch was set to preside over both cases.
