MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The family of celebrity blogger and TV personality Perez Hilton released a statement on his website, confirming that Hilton is able to communicate as he recovers from an apparent mental health crisis that he suffered this week at his home in Miami-Dade County’s Westchester neighborhood.
“Our family wants to once again thank everyone who has reached out with prayers, kind messages, and support for Perez. Your compassionate humanity during this heartbreaking time has meant more than words can express,” the statement read. “This has been incredibly difficult and emotional for us, made even harder because very little information has been made available to our family. While we continue to wait for further updates, we remain hopeful.”
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies received multiple calls Tuesday night from people reporting that Hilton appeared to be harming himself with a knife during a TikTok livestream.
In the video, Hilton was heard saying things like, “This is what you all wanted” and “It will be interesting to see what happens after you die.”
Deputies said they confirmed with family members that Hilton was alone inside and worked to safely de-escalate the situation. Authorities said he was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital to be treated for his injuries and was then Baker Acted.
Hilton’s family said the celebrity, who was born Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., is able to communicate, which has “given our family hope.”
“We respectfully ask for your continued prayers, understanding, and grace as Perez continues to recover,” the statement continued. “We will share additional updates as we receive confirmed information and are able to do so. For now, we’re taking things one step at a time and keeping our focus where it belongs, on Perez and his recovery.
“Again, thank you, truly, for all your support and compassion. We are so grateful.”
Hilton, a Cuban-American, rose to prominence through his celebrity gossip website before expanding into fashion and music coverage and becoming a familiar television personality. Hilton has three children, Mario, Mia and Mayte.
