MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Wednesday who they say participated in an illegal intersection takeover in the county’s Gladeview neighborhood.
The suspect was identified in an arrest report as 27-year-old Evian Jamar Griffin.
According to the report, detectives with MDSO’s Homeland Security Bureau’s Intelligence and Investigations Section were investigating organized intersection takeovers when they identified Griffin as the driver of a black Infiniti during an event around 2:11 a.m. Sunday near Northwest 77th Terrace and Northwest 24th Avenue.
Investigators said Griffin was seen getting out of the vehicle and placing a black shirt over the license plate “to hide it from view.”
They said after returning to the driver’s seat, he drove into an intersection that had been blocked in all four directions by other participants and began “revving the engine and driving in a circular pattern (doing donuts)” while about 70 to 80 spectators surrounded the intersection and recorded the activity.
About 2:49 a.m., detectives again identified Griffin behind the wheel of the Infiniti, the report states. Deputies said he continued performing donuts after approximately 40 to 50 vehicles blocked the roadway.
When marked patrol units arrived to disperse the crowd, deputies attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop, investigators said.
According to the report, Griffin turned off the car’s lights and accelerated southbound onto Florida’s Turnpike at a high rate of speed.
Deputies said they drove more than 100 mph while attempting to catch up as Griffin’s “reckless” driving forced other motorists onto the highway shoulder to avoid collisions.
They said the takeover had been organized through a group chat where participants shared locations and coordinated blocking traffic before vehicles entered the intersection to perform stunts.
According to the report, Griffin also posted videos of himself participating in the takeover on Instagram under the username “SoggyQ50” on Monday.
Deputies said they arrested Griffin without incident outside his home in South Miami Heights on Wednesday, according to the report. Investigators said the Infiniti was parked in the driveway, towed from the property and placed on a 30-day hold.
Jail records show Griffin faces two counts of drag racing on a coordinated highway and accessory after the fact, and one count each of attempted fleeing or eluding marked law enforcement officers at high speed and reckless driving.
As of Thursday morning, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
