Investigators said BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives responded to the intersection of Northeast 49th Street and North Federal Highway at the request of the Lighthouse Point Police Department to investigate the crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian riding a scooter.

The preliminary investigation found the scooter rider was crossing eastbound through the intersection when he was struck by a gray Toyota Corolla traveling southbound, according to detectives.

The driver, Gustavo Mendez, of Boca Raton, left the scene after the crash, authorities said.

They said Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue medics transported the victim to Broward Health North Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives said that as the investigation continued, they located Mendez and the Toyota Corolla and arrested him in Boca Raton.

Additional information about the victim was withheld under Marsy’s Law.

Authorities said the investigation is “ongoing.”
