PLANTATION, Fla. — Darius Parrish refused to stop on Monday night in Broward County, drove off the road, over grass, and into a shallow canal, according to police.
Lauderhill police officers were searching for a suspect who was wearing a blue Nike shirt and blue jeans, according to police scanner traffic.
With the car partially submerged in murky water, Parrish, 30, jumped out and ran away near Hiatus Road and Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation, according to police.
“It never happened here before ... For us, it was a big surprise,” said John Bell, who saw a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter with a spotlight searching his neighborhood.
Plantation police officers searched for Parrish in the area of North University Drive and Cleary Boulevard. A witness said police officers ordered area residents to stay inside.
Parrish attempted to break into a house while he was trying to get away from BSO deputies and Plantation police officers, according to police officers.
According to inmate records, Plantation police officers arrested Parrish, who faced four charges: Two counts of unarmed burglary of an occupied dwelling, third-degree grand theft of property valued between $40 and $750, and resisting arrest without violence.
