MIAMI — A political novice faced off Tuesday against a political veteran in Miami’s District 3 city commission race.
Rolando Escalona, a newcomer and the general manager of Brickell’s Sexy Fish restaurant, went up against two-term former Commissioner Frank Carollo, the brother of current District 3 Commissioner Joe Carollo.
Ultimately, voters decided they wanted fresh eyes on the commission and elected Escalona, who received 53% of the ballots cast.
“I believe people spoke, and they are tired,” said Escalona. “They are tired of seeing no results. They are tired of the same political dynasties, and that’s why they decided to go with somebody like me.”
Frank Carollo took a moment to thank those who helped him when speaking after the results came in.
“Obviously we’re disappointed, but I’m proud of the work that we did,” said Carollo. “I’m proud of all the people that supported me, but obviously we’re disappointed with the results.”
District 3 covers the eastern part of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, as well as The Roads and a significant portion of Brickell.
Before the election, some analysts said a Carollo win may have sparked litigation.
That’s because in November, voters in Miami chose to enact two-term lifetime term limits; Carollo did overcome a legal challenge to remain on the ballot, however.
But Sean Foreman, a political analyst and Barry University professor, said Carollo was “automatically going to be facing a new lawsuit” if he wins.
“The judges will have to determine whether or not this term limits reform goes into effect moving forward, or if there’s some other reason to delay or stay,” Foreman said.
Ultimately, that won’t be necessary.
