‘It’s second nature’: Miami’s Malachi Toney brings poise and versatility ahead of Virginia Tech

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla — Freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney is proving he’s more than just a pass catcher for the Hurricanes, showing poise and versatility as Miami prepares for Saturday’s game at Virginia Tech.

The Hurricanes (8-2, 4-2 ACC) must win their final two games to have any chance of reaching the College Football Playoff, and Toney has emerged as a key weapon in their push.

Against Syracuse, Toney threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Carson Beck, and last week against NC State, he connected on a 44-yard completion with a perfect pass to wide receiver JoJo Trader.

Toney, who played quarterback in high school, said handling the ball under pressure comes naturally.

“Yeah, I say it comes pretty easy to me,” he said. “I’ll say it’s like second nature, to be poised and not to panic in difficult situations or when something, when something goes wrong, you don’t panic and stuff like that. So I just feel like it’s just something that I’ve always had.”

Toney has racked up 59 catches for 698 yards, leading the team in both categories, and his five touchdowns are second on the squad behind CJ Daniels, who has six.

Toney’s versatility adds an extra dimension to an already dynamic Miami offense, giving the Hurricanes a creative weapon as they head to Blacksburg for a critical showdown with Virginia Tech.

Kickoff is set for noon.
