MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins will turn to quarterback Quinn Ewers for his first NFL start on Sunday vs. the Cincinatti Bengals after deciding to bench Tua Tagovailoa, according to reports.
Ewers, a 2025 seventh-round draft selection from the University of Texas, becomes the 27th quarterback to start for Miami since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season.
He brings an accomplished college résumé into the opportunity, having played three seasons at Texas from 2022-24 after beginning his career at Ohio State.
Ewers, 22, finished with 9,128 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions while completing 64.9% of his passes in 37 career games.
He went 27-9 as a starter and added eight rushing touchdowns, ranking third in Longhorns history in passing yards and touchdown passes.
His best season came in 2024, when he threw for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns, following a standout 2023 campaign in which he was named the Big 12 Championship game MVP while leading Texas to the conference title.
Ewers was Miami’s backup quarterback during the team’s Week 7 loss to the Cleveland Browns and saw limited action in that game, but for the most part has served as the Dolphins’ emergency quarterback.
Ewers’ 2025 scouting report from Pro Football Focus highlighted his ability to make plays on the move.
“Ewers showcases solid playmaking ability when throwing on the run, delivering some great throws while scrambling outside the pocket,” according to the report. “His athleticism and improvisational skills make him a dangerous threat out of structure, where he can extend plays and create opportunities for big gains.”
The report also praised his arm talent, noting that while he might not have the strongest arm in terms of velocity.
“His ability to manipulate throwing angles and distribute the ball is impressive. He has a great feel for how to throw receivers open, which results in big plays on tight, downfield passes,” the report stated.
Kickoff for Dolphins (6-8) vs. Bengals (4-10) is set for Sunday at 1 p.m., after the game was flexed out of Sunday Night Football in favor of the New England Patriots (11-3) vs. Baltimore Ravens (7-7)."
